Overheard in the Post Office

January 24th, 2008

Little Girl: Mommy, why did Daddy go to jail today?

Mother: Shh! Because he didn’t pay his child support.

[Mother receives sympathetic stares from bystanders. Decides to talk louder.]

Little Girl: So if he pays his child support, can he get out?

Mother: Yes.

Little Girl: Ok. Good.

[Long pause.]

Little Girl: But how will he pay it if he’s in jail?

Mother: I don’t know.

Little Girl: Well, can’t you just tell them you don’t want it?

Mother: No, I can’t.

Little Girl: Why not?

Mother: Because I do want it.

[Another long pause.]

Little Girl: But I want to see my Dad!

System working as intended?
