Volunteering for an Animal Rescue Organization

February 1st, 2008.

A typical email exchange:

hi…i am interesting in adopting ricardo. he is so cute. is he good with other dogs? how much would it be to adopt him?

Hello:

If you are interested in possibly adopting Ricardo, please feel free to fill out one of our adoption applications located in the right hand side bar of our website. It only takes a few moments of your time. Once we receive your completed application, someone will be in touch with you to discuss Ricardo in further detail.

is he still up for adoption? what about cats? does ricardo like cats? does he come with any toys? how big will he get. i think in honor of his new home, i will change his name to spunky.

Hello Again:

As of right now, Ricardo has not been adopted yet. However, many people have inquired about him and it is doubtful he will be available much longer. Applications are reviewed on a first come, first serve basis.

Like I said before, if you’d like more information about Ricardo, you will need to fill out an adoption application. I am not Ricardo’s foster mother, therefore, I am not privy to much of the specific information you have requested about him. The best way to discuss Ricardo’s needs and temperament is to fill out an adoption application and wait for Ricardo’s foster mother to contact you directly. You are under no obligation to adopt him if you decide he is ultimately not right for your home.

Two Weeks Later:

i just checked the website and it says that ricardo’s ‘adoption pending.’ what does that mean? i was interested in ricardo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Again:

When a puppy is listed as ‘adoption pending,’ it means that someone has filled out an application to adopt Ricardo and their application was approved. Unless there are some extenuating circumstances, Ricardo will be adopted.

Fortunately, Ricardo still has a few litter mates that still need good, loving homes. Feel free to check them out on our website. Also, just recently one of our rescues gave birth to a litter of puppies who will be available for adoption in 7 weeks. You will see them listed on our website complete with pictures and bios around that time. If anyone catches your eye, please feel free to fill our adoption application as soon as possible. As I told you before, the applications are reviewed on a first come, first serve basis, so if you’d like to learn more about any of our pups, it is best to fill one out as soon as possible.

are the new puppies boys or girls? how big will they get?

Hello:

As far as I know, we have puppies of both sexes. However, as I am not the foster mother of said puppies, I cannot give you any further information about their temperaments or breed characteristics. Please fill out an adoption application located in the right hand side bar of our website and I will have the foster mother contact you as soon as possible.

Dear Dumb Guy with Shockingly Poor Reading Comprehension Skills:

If you ask me one more question about these puppies without first filling out a fucking application, I will personally track you down and shoot you in the face.

No, I am not kidding.

Fuck off and die,
