In Defense of Michael Richards and Ann Coulter
November 22nd, 2006.Obviously, I’m going to defend Michael Richards aka Kramer. People talk a big game about ‘tolerance,’ but seem to forget that includes being tolerant of racist hicks. Besides, we all have aversions to random groups of people. Do you honestly believe that hating people who drive aggressively is morally superior to hating someone with a darker skin tone? Hate is hate, people, and we all feel it. And while I agree that screaming ‘Nigger, nigger, nigger’ into a crowded room is ignorant and awkward, I would never dream of responding with physical violence.
I feel the same way about Ann Coulter even though I disagree with the majority of her political opinions. She’s a pro-lifer for Christ sakes and my all time favorite serial killer is Planned Parenthood! I love dead babies! Still, I respect her ability to say what she feels. I can’t get over how many people I’ve spoken to who insist that if they ever met her, they’d slap the piss out of her. That doesn’t seem very tolerant to me.
Newsflash people: Having a friend of a different race doesn’t make you a ‘tolerant’ individual. Not wanting to beat the shit out of people you disagree with (including racists and pro lifers!) is the mark of true tolerance.
Free speech is free speech and that includes shit that we don’t like or things that hurt our feelings. I fear the adult that is completely unable to take any form of criticism more than I fear a bumbling racist. While the racist is off in the woods having his foolish secret white hood meeting, the ‘Anti Hate’ fucker is actually trying to warp the constitution to ban speech that is contrary to his personal ideals.
The first amendment was never designed to protect popular opinion. It was implemented to protect those whose moral compass deviates from our own. There’s real beauty in that and if you can’t realize it, then I have the right to call you a fucking moron.
