Keeping Track of My Stats

December 15th, 2006.

A mere week after my site went live, I broke the only counter I could find that worked directly inside Wordpress. So, I installed Statcounter. I absolutely adore this counter because it shows my daily traffic in graph formation and I have an unnatural and oddly disturbing love of graphs.

A few weeks later, I found this email in my inbox:

Dear V,

Congratulations on having such a successful website! Kudos!

We would really like to continue to provide you with stats about your visitors. But unfortunately as stated several times on the website. We can only afford to track websites getting under 250,000 pageloads a month for free. Your website is outside this model with more than 9,000 pageloads a day!

Please upgrade your account or remove the code immediately or we will have to manually block your project.

For just $29 a month we can allow 500,000 pageloads a day, for just $19 a month we can allow 250,000 pageloads a day and for just $9 a month we can allow 50,000 pageloads a day! We also have discounts for prepaying for a quarter or an entire year. We are flexible and we will NEVER charge you for going over your quota, but we’ll get in touch with you again if you are putting too much load on our servers.

Blah, blah, blah….insert some more stuff about pricing here.

Your website will soon be added to our blocked list, so don’t delay about making your decision. If you do get added to the blocked list, thenafter you upgrade please send a quick ticket to support and your project will be immediately removed from the blocked list.

best regards,

Aodhán Cullen

StatCounter Webmaster

Fucking traffic nazis. Apparantly, the only time Statcounter volunteers to keep track of your traffic FOR FREE is when you’re not getting any.

Because I’m a spoiled brat, I failed to acknowledge that email at all. I didn’t remove the code from my site, nor did I sign up for a paid account. By all intents and purposes, I should be blocked by now. Oddly enough, I’m not. Instead, ol’ Aodhán Cullen up there just sends me that same email every other week.

I think he’s got a crush on me.

    Dear V,
Dunno if this happens to you on a regular basis, but apparently this guy read your “Pet Peeves” post, saw my trackback to it, and decided to leave some comments directed towards you, based on it.
